ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to exploring the process of Korean college students' career decision making process and the mediating factors. For this purpose, the interview data from 15 male and female college students were analyzed. Participants responded interviews in writing, face to face interview, pre-post career indecision questionnaire over one semester. The data were analysed thru grounded theory. The results were as follows: The core category of college students' career decision process was “deciding based on success and support”. The college students's career decision process consisted of entrance into college, adjustment to college life, specifying desirable job, career preparation behavior, and solidifying career decision. The mediating factors in the process were conflicts about career choice between parents/teacher and students, pride in their major, environmental supports etc. College students' career decision levels are various according to individual conditions. While some students decided specific work place, others didn't decide their occupation. Participants had common experiences in that employment conditions were very poor and they were lack of confidence to get the job. But the students, who have mediating conditions in which there were possibilities to enter desirable occupation, ordered their everyday life focusing on career preparation behavior. They prepared the strategies to meet job requirements and determined to succeed in getting job. The students, who perceived their entrance into the present major as success, willingly gave the school life positive meaning. And they did behaviors to preparing employment requirements.
