ABSTRACT

This work provides an analysis of concept distribution and conceptual depth of children's vocabulary by using the word list of M-B CDI-K for children aged 0 to 36 months. This analysis is done depending on the conceptual system of KAIST lexical semantic network (Choi et al., 2005; Choi & Bae, 2004). We have matched each of the lexical units to its corresponding concept node and obtained useful conceptual information about the 632 lexical units of M-B CDI-K which consists of 700 lexical units. Among these 632 lexical units, 53% (336 lexical units) correspond to CONCRETE and 47% (297 units), to ABSTRACT. The 57% of CONCRETE were ARTEFACT. HUMAN-ACT covered 48% of ABSTRACT and FACT/PHENOMENON, 19.6%. Under the FACT/PHENOMENON, most verbal units and adjectival units were distributed. Diverse geometrical figures and algebetic units were distributed to the ABSTRACT RELATION. In addition, by a conceptual depth analysis, we found that the depth in concept system is related to the difficulty level of the words. Through a series of works on the conceptual distribution of the first words of children, we can understand how children develop the conceptual system while learning their first words.
