ABSTRACT

This study investigates the relationship between preservice teachers’ mathematics subject knowledge and their mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs. The subjects for this study are 110 kindergarten preservice teachers in Kyeunggi-Do, Korea. Two instruments were used; 'Mathematics Concept mapping' by Novark and Gowin(1984), translated and adapted by Lee, Choi and Kim(2009), and the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Questionnaires' by Luo (2000), translated and adapted by Chung(2009). Frequency analysis, and MANOVA using SPSS 15 were used to analyze data. The results of this study reveal 1) kindergarten preservice teachers understood mathematics knowledge of 'number' assuperordinate concept the most easily, and understood mathematics knowledge of 'measurement', 'figure', 'operation', 'ordering', 'time', 'statistics', 'patterns', and 'spatial' in order; 2) kindergarten preservice teachers understood mathematics knowledge of 'counting numbers' in subordinate concept easily; 3) however they had difficulties in understanding the mathematics knowledge of 'visualization and spatial reasoning' in geometry and 4) there were significant difference in teaching efficacy beliefs between high-mathematics subject knowledge group and low-mathematics subject knowledge group. The results provide a useful assessment of the status of mathematics teaching education for early childhood teachers which can be applied to developing a more effective mathematics- curriculum.
