ABSTRACT
The year 2009 is the bi-centenary of Joseph Haydn's death. There has been few research on Haydn except considering him as a historical figure in Korea. Therefore, this paper investigated the historical vicissitude of the reception of Haydn and his music. Starting with the 18th-century reception of Haydn, we investigated three countries: Austria, France and England. The central issues of the 19th century in the reception of Haydn were also examined: Papa Haydn, childlike naivety, pigtailed lackey of the ancien régime and etc. We found that the historical view based on the concept of progress strongly influenced the reception of Haydn during this period. The conflict between conservative party and progressive one in the musical world also played a crucial role in the reception of Haydn. The twentieth century had seen at least three Haydn revivals. The first, early in the twentieth century, occurred precisely in reaction against late Romanticism, but was overshadowed by an even greater resurgence of interest in Mozart. The second, after the Second World War, was sparked by another attempt at a new edition and the first modern performances of many works. And during the third, in the twenty-odd years since the Haydn festival-conference in Washington in 1975, the musicological era met the early performance era in ways that sought to reclaim Haydn as a composer of passion and intensity to match Haydn, the composer of elegance and refinement. In conclusion, the author looked into the present situation of Haydn research in Korea and gave some suggestions. First of all, the effort to provide the Korean musical world with more accurate information on Haydn and his music will be indispensible for the next step. Secondly, the new perspective to understand Haydn and his music has to be provided by professional scholars.
