ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the theme, how environmental ethics education in moral subject education can establish its own individuality and justify its existence under the condition that environmental education in Korea has been taught as a separate subject in school. For this purpose, I have compared the themes, contents and methods of environmental education in social studies education(geography education), science education and environmental education with the themes, contents and methods of environmental ethics education in moral subject education. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) Because environmental education in social studies education(geography education) regards environmental issues as one of social issues, which are related to the interest of human-beings, it tries to find effective ways to solve environmental problems in social and political areas. 2) Environmental education in science education and environmental education can be characterized as ‘fact-based’ environmental education. It supposes that students will try to solve environmental problems, if they understand scientific(ecological) facts. 3) Therefore environmental ethics education in moral subject education should be ‘value-based’ environmental education in order to establish its own individuality and justify its existence. And I have suggested three tasks, which can strengthen the individuality of environmental ethics education in moral subject education and justify its own existence. 1) We have to reinterpret the concepts of environmental ethics education in the ethical perspective. 2) The discourses of environmental ethics education must be differentiated. That is to say, we have to differentiate holism from biocentrism in order to overcome the dilemma between anthropocentrism and ecocentrism. 3) Scientific facts must be properly considered in environmental ethics education. So I have suggested the bridge principle of Hans Albert, which can build a proper relationship between value and fact in order to avoid the naturalistic fallacy.
