초록

This study investigates what characteristics are embedded in competence-based curriculum based upon competence-based curriculum implemented in United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Quebec in Canada. Competence-based curriculum reform is characterized as follows:the emphasis of meta-competence and reflectivity, the inclusion of competence as a core constituent of curriculum structure, the connection between school system and external environments, innovations of teaching method and assessments, and the emphasis of educational accountability of learning outcomes. Whereas competence-based curriculum plays a key role in transformative education, much debate and controversy have been generated. This study examines several issues raised towards competence-based curriculum in terms of its behavioral origines, reductionist approach, over-emphasis on performance, and vocationalism. With the analysis of the critical issues involved in competence-based curriculum, this study discusses the conceptual and practical possibilities, dilemmas, and challenges with competence-based curriculum.
