ABSTRACT

Hellas' homosexuality made a appearance on the historical stage on the social tradition of warrior society and confrontations and conflicts between the city states to make use of the energy of warrior comradeship socially. It came into existence through an encounter between the need of a substitute for father, because of inadequate fathering which the political and social conditions of city state brought about, and the desire of Greeks to enjoy the youthfulness of boy and to perpetuate the characteristics of boy. There is a tendency in modern culture to regard heterosexuality as normal and natural and homosexuality as the opposite. But the ancient Greeks did not regard a homoerotic relationship as harmful to the individual or society as long as its partners properly conducted it with the respect for each other. They thought things which are beautiful and noble, regardless of sex, could be an target of love, and it is the real character with which the nature endows human beings. Michel Foucault tries to turn his thoughts in own latter writings dramatically. While having devoted himself to criticizing and deconstructing the modern reason and subject in the former works, he looked for possibility of a new subject through reinterpreting the life style and attitude of ancient Greek here. The practices that Greek made use of desire were an important motif as the technology to form and control Self and the homosexuality was its practical province. The love of boy took a meaningful charge of Greek civil education, in other words, paideia as the deep structure of Greek culture. It played a role of engine in that Greek achieved miraculous works in varied activities, as boys realized himself from careful concern and instruction of the older, while men appropriated the characteristics of boy.
