ABSTRACT

This study examines the level of perceived work-family balance reported by married employees, and how environmental characteristics of work and family are related to their perceptions of balancing the two, both in regards of gender differences. Data were gathered from 688 employees (male: 485, female: 203) working in sixteen major firms in Korea. Hierarchical regressions were conducted on perceived work-family balance using categorical independent variables (environmental characteristics of family and work, respectively) including gender interaction terms, and OLS regression was conducted on two separate models for men and women. The results were: (1) women reported to have more balanced life than men. (2) Work environmental characteristics contributed the most in explaining the variance of the model. (3) There were similarities as well as differences in perceived work-family balance between men and women. Among family characteristics, higher level of spouse support was associated with feeling more balanced in both groups. (4) Among work characteristics, time pattern variables such as weekly working hours and overtime work were negatively associated with feeling balanced in both genders. However, job flexibility was positively associated with men's sense of balance, and job controls were positively associated with women's. Gender differences both in the meaning of perceived balance and process of perception were discussed based on these findings.
