ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the grammatical ability of school-aged Korean children according to language sampling contexts and the grade. The subjects were sixty normal children; each 20 of them were in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade. This study focused on two elicitation contexts for language sampling: conversation and story generation, both often used in clinical settings. The samples were divided into T-units, defined as an independent clause with any accompanying subordinate(dependent) clauses. Grammatical ability of expressive language was analyzed by MLTw(Mean length of Terminable units in words), MLTm(Mean Length of Terminable units in morphemes), MLTgm(Mean Length of Terminable units in grammatical morphemes), MDCTU(Mean number of Dependent Clauses per Terminable Unit) and the proportion of grammatical morpheme errors. As results, there were significant differences in MLTw, MLTm, MLTgm, and MDCTU according to the contexts of language sample elicitation and the grades. Story generation tended to elicit longer grammatical units than conversation. Also it was observed with the fact that it has the interaction effects between grade and methods of language sample elicitation in the MLTgm, MDCTU. There were significant differences in the proportion of grammatical morpheme errors between the 1st grade and the 5th grade regardless of language sampling contexts. In conclusion, MLTw, MLTm, MLTgm, MDCTU, and the proportion of grammatical morpheme errors would be helpful criteria in assessing grammatical ability of Korean school-aged children.
