ABSTRACT

This study examined the influence of various types of maternal control strategies on children’s compliance/noncompliance behaviors in a cleanup situation. Sixty-five kindergarten children, aged five, and their mothers were observed in a semi-structured lab setting. The children’s and mothers’ behaviors were videotaped and rated by two coders. The results showed that mothers’ negative control strategies including directive control and threat were positively correlated with children’s noncompliance behaviors. In particular, the mothers of extremely noncompliant children used negative strategies more repeatedly than did other mothers. In addition, behavior changes in children were related to changes in maternal control strategies.
