AB - Assistive technology has been gaining consistent attention since year 2000 and had a significant impact on independence and quality of lives of people with disabilities in all aspects including daily lives, education, and employment. In particular, it has contributed to job security and employment improvement of the disabled. However, compared to institution and current status of the U.S. in terms of assistive technology, Korea has weaker institutional and academic foundation and attentions and related personnel are also insufficient. This research is to compare Korea's assistive technology service and personnel situation centering on Assistive Technology Center under Korea Employment Promotion Agency for the Disabled, which was built in 2004 with the U.S. cases and to present roles of assistive technology service providers in the workplace and development strategies for enhancing disability employment. In order to accelerate the use of assistive technology in the working environment in the future, academic development through academic institution is required. At the same time, legal foundation for using assistive technology and nurturing professional personnel in this area should be laid. In addition to these efforts, constant attentions and investment are imperative to help the disabled perform jobs more conveniently.

ABSTRACT

Assistive technology has been gaining consistent attention since year 2000 and had a significant impact on independence and quality of lives of people with disabilities in all aspects including daily lives, education, and employment. In particular, it has contributed to job security and employment improvement of the disabled.
